Pod Shots – Star Trek

imageWelcome back to another episode of Pod Shots! In this episode I’m joined by 11 O’Clock Comics’ own David A. Price! In this episode we’re going back to the Star Trek well with a discussion on the 2009 Star Trek franchise reboot film. We begin with a discussion of our histories of Star Trek. Getting into the discussion David and Eric talk about the casting, the set design choices, the characters, and we discuss the plot which can be a little tricky. We do move into more of the plot points so please be warned that this is a very heavy spoiler discussion. The hosts then discuss what we expect out of the latest film and whether either of them is reading up on Star Trek: Into Darkness or if they are trying to go in blind. It was a thrill having David on to discuss Star Trek and I think it makes for a pretty damn fine episode! Definitely one to check out!

Episode 33 – Books to Movies Part 3

Text DescriptionIn this episode we continue our mega theme with Books to Movies Part 3. We begin our talk on the films: The Princess Bride, Road to Perdition, Mean Girls and Eric sadly, takes on the film Away From Her, by himself. Just because the book is already out, doesn’t mean you’re off the hook from ordering a copy of Low Concept 3 at www.kingbonepress.stonenvy.com! It’s a great book at a great price and you would be helping Rachel and I out by grabbing a copy. Getting into the actual discussion, we begin with the cult classic children’s film The Princess Bride. We discuss how fun and light but entertaining the film is before moving into the much richer and complex film Road to Perdition. We spend a god deal of time discussing Sam Mendes the director and his choices of camera shots. We talk about the stellar cast from Tom Hanks to Paul Newman, Daniel Craig, and Jude Law. We spoil the shit out of this film so please be warned. We then move into Mean Girls a surprisingly fun little film and we talk about if high school girls are really like this and how great a writer Tina Fey can be. Eric wraps up the show with a solo discussion on the film Away From Her. He talks about why he loves this downbeat film, how we came upon it and what he takes away from a film about two people in love, suffering. Episode 32 – Books to Movies Part 2

Text DescriptionIn this episode we continue our mega theme with Books to Movies Part 2. We begin our talk on the films: Into the Wild, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Moneyball, and The Hunger Games. We start off with a quick reminder to support our writing efforts by pre-ordering Low Concept 3 at www.kingbonepress.stonenvy.com Getting into the actual discussion, we begin with a frustrating film for one of us, the 2007 film Into the Wild. We discuss the non-fiction book to film including the work of Writer/Director Sean Penn and star Emile Hirsch. Rachel’s first pick, The Time Traveler’s Wife is a interesting mix of romantic film and time traveling science fiction. Our third film is Moneyball, again a true story turned film and the hosts look at how this statistics based novel was turned into a Brad Pitt film. Finally the discussion falls upon The Hunger Games and the hosts spend a good amount of time discussing the books vs. the film. Both of the hosts had a bit of trouble with the film but it makes for an interesting and lively discussion of this YA phenomenon. Join us for another entertaining episode of Plain Label Podcast!

Pod Shots – Lucky Number Slevin

imageWelcome back to another episode of Pod Shots! In this episode I’m joined by returning guest, Shawn Pryor! In another of the “new to Eric” films, we’ve selected the 2006 crime film, Lucky Number Slevin. In this episode Shawn discusses his connection to the film, while Eric briefly mentions why he wasn’t drawn to it, and hadn’t seen it before. They go over the casting of the film, specifically Josh Hartnett and break down the twists and turns that this film brings. They discuss what works so well about the film and what doesn’t seem to work in this modern crime/noir style film. It’s always a good discussion with Shawn and this episode is no exception to that rule!

Episode 31 – Books to Movies Part 1

Text DescriptionIn this episode we begin a mega theme with our first discussion on books that were made into movies. We begin our first talk on three movies that were books that either one of our hosts, or both, have read. In this episode we’re discussion the films: Sin City, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Watchmen. We start off with a quick reminder to support our writing efforts by pre-ordering Low Concept 3 at www.kingbonepress.stonenvy.com Getting into the actual discussion, we begin with a look at the adaptation of the Frank Miller series Sin City. We discuss the form, the fact that it was directly taken from the book, and the performances in this noir style of filmmaking. We move into a much different type of film with a discussion on The Perks of Being a Wallflower in which one of our hosts admits to openly crying during the film. We wrap things up with a discussion on the most celebrated comic book of all time, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen. We discuss a bit of the book before really getting into the film. We discuss the point of the film vs. the point of the book, the costume design, and the look that comes with most Zack Snyder films. Plus, if you listen close, you can hear Kruse getting worked up about how much this film missed the mark. It’s rare that our Kruser gets all upset about a film but you can hear the frustration in her voice. Join us for another entertaining episode of Plain Label Podcast!

Plain Label Podcast: Pod Shots – Searching for Sugar Man

imageWelcome back to another episode of Pod Shots! In this episode I’m joined by returning guest, Steve Bruns! In our first discussion of a documentary, we selected the 2012 doc, Searching for Sugar Man, the Oscar Winner in 2012 for best documentary, although this was recorded before the Oscars. We dig into the film, discussing the artist known as Rodriguez and his position in the music world in South Africa. We break down what specifically works so well about the film and gush about the music of Rodriguez. We then get into the idea that Rodriguez was crafted in certain ways for the film, and it seems as though any potential flaws were left out leaving a man that’s an incredible singer/songwriter, and an inspiring man. It’s a fun conversation, and fun episode and if nothing else it opened our eyes to the music of Rodriguez!
