Another bomb at the box office?

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that for the second week in a row, a major Hollywood film has fallen short of expectations at the box office. The first was Speed Racer, which cost an estimated 160 million but only brought in 18.6 in its opening weekend. The second appears to be Prince Caspian, which did slightly better at 56.6 million over its first three days, while costing ‘only’ 100 million.

The reason for this “wobbly start for the lucrative summer moviegoing season in North America” is being placed on the fact that Prince Caspian is getting less than stellar reviews (although they made sure to point out that the title character is being played by a newcomer).

To me, the reason is a little simpler than bad (or not glowing) reviews. It’s one of simple economics. Ticket prices are high, concession prices are high, gas prices to get to the theaters are high and quite frankly, I think that if people are going to spend their hard earned money on a trip to the movie theater, they are going to spend it on known properties like Indiana Jones (out next week) or which had really cool trailers like Iron Man (which has made over 200 million dollars and is in line for not one but two sequels).

I was saving my money for Iron Man, Indiana Jones, The Dark Knight and The Hulk. Anything else would just be lost in the shuffle, relegated to ‘Get on DVD‘ status. I’m pretty sure that I’m not the only one and when the final tally is done after Labor Day, those four films will be at the top of the list for box office gross for the summer.

Iron Sky Trailer

My friend Martha pointed me in the direction of this trailer.  It looks very intriguing.  I’m curious to see what the story is going to be like.  The music for the trailer is haunting beautiful.  I thought that it was either Madeleine Peyroux or Eva Cassidy at first, but it turns out that it is someone called Kaiti Kink.  The names on the credits look to be Swedish or Iceland or something from that region of the world.  We will probably never see it in the US, but it looks pretty cool.

Journeyman star in Terminator 4

Great news for Moon Bloodgood, who played in the late lamented (at least by me) television show Journeyman. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she will star in Terminator 4, along with Christian Bale, Sam Worthington and Anton Yelchin. I already had high hopes for T4 (after T3 they can only go up) even with McG as the director, but now I am actually looking forward to seeing it. Moon is a beautiful woman who can actually act. Good casting.

What? The Amish don’t like movies suddenly or something? Then in our challenge reviews Christian talks about Robot Stories directed by Greg Pak, and Keith talks about Blue Velvet directed by David Lynch. After all of that, the guys show their professionalism by realizing mid-stream that they’re completely unprepared for the show. Hijinks ensue!

Cine-Rama Podcast Episode 4: Just Slightly Out of Sync

The Indiana Jones episode was so powerful that it shattered the boundaries of space and time, leaving us with an episode that’s just slightly out of sync with real time. . .

In this episode the boys are back on format with their long-promised There Will Be Blood review, and it promises to be the most controversial review yet (not that any of the previous ones were really that shocking or out there). Anyway, the point is that after this review all the other critics will be after Christian and Keith’s blood. Then we follow it up with our challenge reviews. Keith reviews Across the Universe, and Christian reviews Oldboy. WARNING: the Oldboy review is SPOILER HEAVY, and if you have ANY intention of watching Oldboy you should do so before listening to this episode.

And just when you think its safe to empty your recycle bin – Wha? What’s this? A new segment?
